Ky Unemployment Up Slightly for June 2017

Kentucky’s seasonally-adjusted preliminary unemployment rate for June 2017 was 5.1 percent, according to the state's Office of Employment and Training.

The June  rate was up one tenth of a percentage point from the five percent reported in May.


Lexington Unemployment Jumps to 4 Percent

2017 started in the Lexington community with an uptick in unemployment.  Lexington’s Finance Commissioner sees no reason to sound an economic alarm. 

The jobless rate for Fayette County jumped almost a percentage point from December to January, going from 3.1 percent to 4 percent. 

Finance Commissioner Bill O’Mara says more study may lend more answers, but he says there’s typically less employment past the holiday period.  Plus more people are likely looking for work.

East Ky Judge Exec Pleads Case for Unemployed Miners

Pike County's judge-executive is calling on Kentucky elected officials to extend federal unemployment benefits to help out-of-work miners. Wayne Rutherford wrote a letter this week to Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul and Rep. Hal Rogers. Rutherford said he finds it "unconscionable and heartless" that lawmakers would decline to extend unemployment benefits.
