FDA Weighs Pros and Cons of Vape Flavors

In 2014, about one in four teens nationwide reported smoking an e-cigarette, which are lauded y the vaping industry as a safer alternative to cigarettes. But the Food ad Drug Administration is looking at potentially limiting or banning of these e-cigarette flavors.

For exaple, something called Cutwood that has hints of Golden Honey Graham cereal, roasted nut clusters creamy milk and sliced bananas.

On the heels of a record year for lobbyist spending, Kentucky businesses and organizations spent an all-time high of $2.6 t million dollars in the first portion of the current legislative session. 

After spending more than $20 million dollars in 2017, lobbyists started this year by spending 20 percent more than they spent at the beginning of last year’s session. The top spender during the first month of this year’s legislative session was the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.

A new survey of the health behavior of Kentucky youth is showing some positive signs, especially regarding tobacco use.

Hundreds of kids scurrying to buses are oblivious to a sign above them declaring Bourbon County High School “100 percent Tobacco Free.”

But upstairs in the library, sophomore and anti-smoking advocate Jacob Steward unfurls a six-foot scroll with earth-toned papers trapped between clear sheets of laminate. He begins reading the anti-smoking slogans he’ll post  around the school.


Kick It Kentucky Week Promotes Smoking Cessation

More than two dozen health organizations are promoting the physical benefits found soon after quitting smoking. 

They did so Wednesday in announcing the first Kick It, Kentucky week.


Smokers could have an easier time kicking the habit thanks to a measure passed by the Kentucky General Assembly this week.

Though insurance companies already offer aids including nicotine patches, the bill would prevent insurers from charging co-pays, requiring prior authorization or step therapy — a program that encourages the use of the least expensive drug before moving onto more costly drugs — to gain access.

The Kentucky senate voted Wednesday to make all public school campuses tobacco free 

Bill Sponsor Dr. Ralph Alvarado told senators Kentucky’s youth smoking rate is higher than the national average for adult smokers. The Winchester physician was asked about having tobacco products in a vehicle on school grounds.

The  Senate Education Committee Thursday unanimously approved legislation requiring all Kentucky public schools to be tobacco free . The measure calls for posting “no smoking” signs and developing local school tobacco policies.

Report Says Youth Smoking Declining in Kentucky

According to the results of a recent federal study, teen smoking in Kentucky is on the decline.   But, the state's primary public health doctor says there's still plenty of room for improvement.   

It was reported today that Humana intends to stop hiring smokers, where the action is legally permitted. The company wants to encourage healthy behavior among workers and already has a policy of not hiring smokers in southwestern Ohio.
