Battery Plant Coming to Eastern Kentucky

West Coast Battery Company EnerBlu plans to invest $372 million in a manufacturing plant in Pikeville.  The formal announcement came this morning in eastern Kentucky. 

Long-time Congressman Hal Rogers says the expected 875 jobs eventually will be just the right medicine for a region hit hard by coal industry losses.  “You’ve been talking about evolving the economy of a whole region of the state.  This is a big step in that direction,” said Rogers.

 

Pikeville to Host 4th SOAR Summit

Hundreds of people will converge on downtown Pikeville Friday for the 4th Shaping Our Appalachian Region Summit. 

The overall objective continues to be rebuilding economies in 54 Southeastern Kentucky counties.

Central Kentucky business leaders got briefings on Southern and Eastern Kentucky economic strategies this week.  The Commerce Lexington-sponsored trip included stops in Williamsburg, Hazard, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Paintsville, and Salyersville.  

Group President Bob Quick says the trip and related events are about coordinated efforts to grow a statewide economy.  The Commerce Lex CEO says it’s incumbent on central Kentucky business interests to reach out and help other economies as well.  “When all the Commonwealth is growing, then we’re all going to do better,” noted Quick.

Second SOAR Summit Focuses on 'Working the Plan'

Federal, state, and local officials joined hundreds of interested residents in Pikeville Monday for the second 'Shaping Our Appalachian Region' Summit. The meeting gave participants an opportunity to strategize on action steps to help move forward the eastern Kentucky economy.

A consultant says Appalachian Air has cleared another hurdle and can start working toward flying in and out of Pikeville.

Adviser Luke Schmidt told the Pikeville City Commission this week that the Pikeville-Pike County Airport won't need a certification from the federal government before allowing the airline to start flying.

On this week's edition of Kentucky Tonight, host Bill Goodman and guests will discuss a proposal to make the University of Pikeville a state school.
