KET Premieres a new documentary tonight focusing on the opioid epidemic and dives deep into treatment options across the commonwealth.

Opioids – including heroin and prescription opioids such as oxycodone and hydrocodone – killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deaths due to opioid overdoses claim the lives of 91 Americans every day.

The Kentucky Humanities Council Tuesday named a new Executive Director.  As WEKU’s John Hingsbergen reports, the new head of the non-profit is a person whose name and face are familiar to many Kentuckians.

The two major party candidates for lieutenant governor of Kentucky support ways to enhance education, but they have different ideas. On KET’s Kentucky Tonight, Republican candidate Jenean Hampton said she believes in small government.  “I’ve watched as government gets in the way of people,” Hampton said. “They try to be helpful, and they get bigger and bigger.”

First up, an announcement regarding technical matters.  For the next few weeks, we are likely to have outages on 90.9 WEKH out of Hazard as a result of tower work being done by our “landlord” KET.

These outages will happen during daylight hours, on days when weather permits work on the tower and they are unavoidable due to the nature of the work as a matter of safety for the tower crews.

You’ll find more information on the WEKU Facebook page and at WEKU dot FM.

The two candidates in Kentucky’s sixth congressional district race stand on opposite sides when it comes to health care reform.  Incumbent Andy Barr and challenger Elisabeth Jensen appeared Monday night on KET'S Kentucky Tonight.  Barr argues current reforms will leave states like Kentucky with unaffordable Medicaid costs.  "The state simply doesn't have the capacity to fund, at this point, this massive expansion of Medicaid.  This is going to crowd out our ability to fund education," said Barr.
