Kentucky Horse Park Hosts Model Horse Fest

For the 28th consecutive year, thousands of people are converging on the Kentucky Horse Park this weekend to see and show off model horses. 

This year's Breyer Fest features an India theme.

In addition to "live" and model horse activities for collectors and visitors, the three-day festival includes a focus on cultural aspects of India.  BreyerFest participants can take in Bollywood dancing, tent-pegging, and polo.

For the first time, the Extreme Mustang Makeover is taking place in central Kentucky. 

The competition brings trainers and their mustang horses to the All-Tech Arena to demonstrate disciplined maneuvers after just 100 days together.

The campground at the Kentucky Horse Park is once again playing host to bluegrass music performers at all levels this weekend. 

The 44th Festival of the Bluegrass is attracting campers from inside and outside the Commonwealth.

Competitors from as far away as Washington state, Minnesota, and Massachusetts faced steamy Bluegrass conditions over the weekend as they battled in the Ultimate National Championships. College division three ultimate disc title winners were decided at the Kentucky Horse Park.


Bluegrass Ultimate

Flying discs will fill the air in high numbers this weekend at the Kentucky Horse Park’s polo fields. 

Some 750 players from across the country will gather for the national Division three College Ultimate Championships.

For some four decades competing horses and riders from around the world have been coming to the bluegrass in the springtime.  This weekend is no exception with the Rolex Three Day Event being held at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The Kentucky Horse Park is one of two finalists to host the 2022 FEI World Equestrian Games.  As WEKU’S Stu Johnson reports the announcement came Thursday.

Cemetery Tours Featured at Ky. Horse Park

Sights not often seen at the Kentucky Horse Park will be highlighted during an October special tour.  It comes with the first cemetery tour.

The Cemetery Crawl: History and Mystery of the Kentucky Horse Park program includes stops at three cemeteries on the grounds plus dueling grounds and Buford Duke House build in the late 1700’s. 

Sand Sculpture Jumps to Debut at Ky. Horse Park

The 2016 International Hunter Derby Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park will feature more than 70 of the nation’s top equestrian riders and a first for this type of equine competition.   The course will include jumps over eight sculptures, made with 125 tons of sand. 

New Home for USEF Planned at Ky. Horse Park

The United States Equestrian Federation reaffirmed Monday the Kentucky Horse Park will serve as their National Headquarters.  A building will be constructed on the Horse Park’s property to house the headquarters permanently. 

The letter of intent, signed by both parties and presented by Kentucky’s Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet begins a 40 year lease at the horse park for the US Equestrian Federation.

Sidesaddle Competition Part of High Hope Event

The 48th High Hope Steeplechase event at the Kentucky Horse Park this weekend will include two new lady sidesaddle races.  High Hope Racing Director Michele Primm says it will represent the third leg in a sidesaddle series and feature European World Champion Susan Oaks.  

Primm says steeplechase racing dates back centuries to when people in England raced from one church steeple to another church steeple.

The Kentucky Horse Park Commission would be trimmed from 17 to 9 members under a bill passed by the state senate Monday.  Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer sponsors the measure.  He says there are management issues needing attention at the horse park.   "The secretary of the finance cabinet has taken the extraordinary step of reducing the horse park’s purchasing authority from $20,000 to $1,000,” said Thayer.

Republican Gov. Matt Bevin's administration has scaled back the Kentucky Horse Park's purchasing authority amid allegations of improper purchasing practices.

The directive from the state Finance Cabinet's secretary comes as a top Senate Republican pushes legislation to revamp the horse park's governing body.

Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer says the Finance Cabinet's findings show his motives are justified in seeking to overhaul the park's commission.

The Senate Majority Leader is calling for a performance audit of the Kentucky Horse Park.  Senator Damon Thayer is proposing legislation to alter the make up of the Kentucky Horse Park Commission.

Floor Leader Damon Thayer brought to light his concerns during a speech to members.  “Things are not as good as they seem at the Kentucky Horse Park,” said Thayer.

Equine Hobbyists Expected for Weekend Horse Park Event

More than 15 thousand people are anticipated for BreyerFest 2015.  It runs Friday through Sunday at the Kentucky Horse Park.   It's an event focusing on the model horse hobby focusing on equine entertainment and accessories. 

Also this weekend, the North American Young Riders Championship will include three to four hundred competitors.  Horse Park Deputy Director Darren Ripley says this marks the start of a big run at the facility,  "We start this week, these two shows, and this is kind of what my staff would call the six weeks of utter chaos.”

Ichthus Festival 20-15 Featured Brothers and Sisters in Harmony

    After making music for more than 40 years near Wilmore, Ichthus, a once nationally renowned Christian music festival made its debut last week at the Kentucky Horse Park. Bands with a sibling theme made up part of the inaugural lineup this year. 

'Bread of Stone' closed out the first night of the Christian music festival a week ago. The Sioux City band includes two brothers, Ben and Bill Kristijanto who are of Indonesian descent. After playing on Wednesday, the band did an acoustic set Saturday afternoon which included an Indonesian ditty.

The Rodeo Comes to Town this Weekend

Vietnam Veterans Tribute Wall Coming to Kentucky Horse Park

The Kentucky Horse Park will be home to the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall for five days in July.   Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Heather French-Henry says the wall is a 300 foot long replica of the memorial in Washington."People who may not have the opportunity to travel to D.C. to the Vietnam Memorial can do so at one of these walls and get the same rubbing of the names,” said French-Henry. “And I think that's extremely important."

Horse Park Director Looking for New Revenue Opportunities

The new director of the Kentucky Horse Park hopes the 1,200 acre attraction will become self-sustaining over time.  Jamie Link came on board in mid-November, replacing long time director John Nicholson.  Link wants to see a review of the park's rates.  "We'll be looking at all aspects of that from admissions to food services, to gift shop offerings, to all of those things; the campground rates and things,” said Link.  “Just to make sure that we're still a good value, but we're also looking at the market and being a good operation for the taxpayers of Kentucky."

The country’s oldest indoor horse show is coming to Kentucky. Officials announced today that the 128th edition of the National Horse Show will be hosted at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. For years the event was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. But National Horse Show Association President Mason Phelps says downtown Manhattan was not ideal.
