EKU Basketball Colonels Take on SEC's Ole Miss

Fresh off a come-from-behind win Friday in Texas, the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team faces a taller task Monday night in Mississippi. 

EKU sports fans lady weekend experienced both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

Athletics Departments at Eastern Kentucky University and Jacksonville State are both apologizing for a weekend halftime incident during the football game in Alabama. 

It involved EKU football players and JSU band members.

A bronze likeness of the man who helped create a football tradition at Eastern Kentucky University now overlooks the field in the stadium that bears his name.

For the second time in two years, but only the fifth time ever, Eastern Kentucky University battles the University of Kentucky on the football field.

EKU Football to Benefit From Largest Gift Ever

A member of an Eastern Kentucky University championship team a half century ago has made the largest single gift commitment ever to the school’s football program.

The $250,000 will go to help equip an expansion at Roy Kidd Stadium.

Eastern Kentucky University student athlete Tyler Swafford’s got a whirlwind schedule this Saturday. He’s making a trip to the nation’s capital for a scholarship interview before trotting out onto the field in Richmond to lead his team.

The redshirt sophomore quarterback is vying for a Mitchell Scholarship. His interview is set for 8:30 a.m. in Washington. He’s one of 20 finalists in the national competitive scholarship program sponsored by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance. If awarded one of the 12 scholarships, he'll spend a year studying in Ireland.

Eastern Kentucky University returns to Richmond Saturday for its first home conference football game as the Colonels take on Southeast Missouri State. 

SMU is off to a 2 and 0 start in the Ohio Valley Conference while Eastern comes into the 6:00 pm contest looking for its first league win.  EKU has won five straight against the Redhawks. 

The Colonels go pink this weekend for the “Tackle Cancer Game.”  Donation buckets will be on the stadium concourse to raise money for the American Cancer Society. ​

EKU Opens Football Season Against Purdue

The Eastern Kentucky University Colonels open up their football season in northern Indiana tomorrow.  It’s a return trip to West Lafayette to take on Purdue.  Four years ago, EKU took on the Boilermakers in the season opener, losing 48 to 6.    

The Colonels begin their 104thseason under the leadership of new head coach Mark Elder.  Eastern has fared better against Football Bowl Subdivision teams in recent years, beating Miami of Ohio in 2014 and losing in overtime to the University of Kentucky last year.

The Eastern Kentucky University Football Colonels have been picked to finish second in this year’s Ohio Valley Conference race. The rankings came during an annual pre-season event in Nashville.

EKU earned 100 points in the preseason poll, three more than third-place Eastern Illinois. 

Jacksonville State, coming off an appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision title game, picked up all 16 available first place votes. 

Three Colonels, offensive tackle Justin Adekoya, kicker Lucas Williams, and punter Keith Wrzuszcak are on the preseason all OVC team.  

UT Special Teams Coordinator Named as EKU's New Head Coach

Eastern Kentucky University has hired a new head football coach.  The new Colonel Coach comes from the University of Tennessee.

EKU will formally introduce Mark Elder as its new football coach on Thursday.  Elder has served as UT’s tight end coach and special teams coordinator since 2013.  He comes to Richmond as the 14th head coach in program history. Dean Hood was relieved as coach of Eastern in late November after eight years at the helm. 

EKU Dismisses Football Coach Dean Hood

Eastern Kentucky University has relieved Dean Hood of his duties as head football coach, Director of Athletics Steve Lochmueller announced Monday.

“I want to thank Dean for his service to Eastern Kentucky University,” Lochmueller said.  “These decisions are never taken lightly.  After a careful review of our football program, I feel a change in leadership is needed.”   

Hood compiled a record of 55-38 in eight seasons as head coach.  The 2015 squad finished 6-5 and in fourth place in the OVC with a 5-3 mark.

Eastern Travels to #1 Jacksonville State Saturday

With the top spot in the Ohio Valley Conference on the line, Eastern Kentucky University on Saturday takes on number one Jacksonville State University.  Both teams are 4-0 in the league. During this week’s OVC teleconference, EKU Coach Dean Hood said the Gamecocks are solid in every aspect of the game.  “No question they’re the number one team in the nation and deserved so," Hood said. "I thought a year ago when we played them that they were the best FCS football team we’ve ever played.” 

EKU Football Moves to Georgetown Due to Security Threat

A security threat on the Eastern Kentucky University campus has prompted officials to move Thursday's football game to Georgetown College. 

EKU says the decision was due to an escalating threat after the discovery of graffiti on campus that threatened to "kill all" this week.

The venue change comes following an emotional loss to the University of Kentucky on Saturday. During this week’s OVC teleconference, EKU Head Coach Dean Hood said senior cornerback Stanley Absanon held his own against UK.

The Eastern Kentucky University football team is mourning the loss off one of its members.  19 year old Joey Kraemer, a redshirt defensive lineman, died over the weekend after his SUV struck a tree off Tates Creek Road in Madison County.

EKU Football Players Dies in Weekend SUV Crash

The Eastern Kentucky University community is mourning the loss of a student-athlete.  19 year old Joey Kraemer died in a weekend crash in Madison County.

Joey Kraemer, an EKU redshirt freshman football player, was killed after his SUV left Tates Creek Road and struck a tree.  Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison says, judging from the damage to the vehicle, speed was definitely a factor in the crash.

Eastern Kentucky University and Valparaiso will meet on the football field Thursday for the first time since 1947. 

Conference affiliation has been a hot topic in and around Richmond during the off season. A great deal of discussion surrounded Eastern’s interest in moving up a level to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Officials with the Sun Belt Conference announced this week they've selected Coastal Carolina to fill an open spot in their Division one league.
