Kentucky Budget Surplus Seen Less Likely

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky's general fund tax revenues increased 2.4 percent in March - enough to ward off a deficit but not enough to promise a surplus.

State Budget Director Jane Driskell announced the state collected $753.5 million in March, a $17.7 million increase from last year.

Legislative Leaders to Meet with Governor on Tax Reform

Leaders from both the Kentucky House and Senate are scheduled to meet with Governor Beshear Monday to talk tax reform.  Lawmakers have been waiting on details of a proposal. Governor Beshear promised weeks ago he would come forward with a legislative proposal to reform taxes.  But, the particulars of how to change the state’s tax structure will likely be revealed in Monday's meeting.

Aviation Needs Under Review

Kentucky lawmakers want to know more about aviation needs, including aircraft owned and operated by the state.  The Department of Aviation has 35 employees and an annual budget of around $10 million. The department oversees three fixed-wing aircraft and one helicopter. Two other planes under the department's control were sold at auction last month.

EKU Head Counts Fiscal Blessings

After a couple years of recession and state budget cuts, the president of Eastern Kentucky University says some bills are coming due.  Two new buildings are going on-line at EKU and President Doug Whitlock must figure out how to pay for their operation and maintenance. The state once provided funds for such expenses, but, now schools like Eastern must pay those bills.
