Senate President Robert Stivers says modified legislation to overhaul the state’s public pension systems could be introduced next week.  He said Friday, the bill could be dropped in the basket as early as Monday, but he called the middle of next week a more likely "target date."

“When we get this I think what we will do is have a discussion among ourselves, brief the other caucuses, discussion with the executive branch and then choose the location for which we decide to start it.”

New Senate Education Committee Chair Named

Newly named Senate Education Committee Chair Max Wise hopes funding for elementary and secondary schools can be protected during the 2018 legislative session.  Traditionally, there’s been a hands-off approach to the state’s funding formula for K through 12 education.

But, Wise says, the amount of property taxes needed to fund schools coupled with job loss in some counties is concerning.

Senate Leaders Focusing on Pension Reforms

Much of the attention on day one of the Kentucky General Assembly focused on the House, and the status of Speaker Jeff Hoover.   

Meanwhile, the Kentucky Senate was gearing up for a proposed overhaul of the state’s pension systems. 

A sexual harassment investigation in the House had members there debating decisions about leadership.  In the Senate, a military band opened the session with music.
