University of Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips is confident he has the offensive arsenal needed to take on the SEC this season. The Wildcats no longer have Derrick Locke and Randall Cobb to run and catch the ball, but Phillips says his team has worked through transitions before.
"Now [wide receiver coach] Tee Martin's job should be a lot easier than mine was in 2008. He's now teaching plays. Those guys understand the position. They understand when someone comes up in their face. So I'm excited about the possibilities of having some more playmakers like we've had here at Kentucky."
The theme for this year's squad is "Rise." The Wildcats are coming off a 6-7 season in 2010.
At SEC Media Days in Birmingham Thursday, Phillips also praised the developing leadership qualities of senior linebacker Danny Trevathan. Senior offensive guard Stuart Hines says he and his teammates have put in work and bonded in the offseason.
"A workout we've been doing on Thursday nights, we call it Thursday Night Lights. We bring music out there and everything and everybody really gets fired up for that workout. For some reason it's really something that's kind of made us come together as a team a lot."
The Big Blue football season starts September 1 when the Wildcats take on Western Kentucky.
