Tornado Damaged Joplin Gets New Storm Warnings
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Jasper County, Mo, home to devastated Joplin, where at least 89 people perished in a late afternoon tornado yesterday. The Joplin Globe warns the storms could produce winds stronger than 60 miles per hour.
Reporter Dan Verbeck of member station KCUR has arrived in Joplin. He found much of the town unrecognizable:
"Fence lines are covered with insulation and pieces of houses...there is a - or there was a truck stop that's virtually leveled, with the exception of the exterior of the building. The pumps are blown away. Right across the street there is a fireworks warehouse. And it's intact."
Dan says search and rescue crews are arriving from all over the Midwest to help, including from 150 miles away in Kansas City. But he says it's chaos because of the new storms pounding the region.
Although the death toll stands at 89, Dan warns it will take time to see if more people have died in the rubble. Copyright 2011 National Public Radio. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/.
