State Auditor to Review Fayette Schools Books

May 28, 2014

Kentucky's auditor will review mismanagement allegations made regarding the state's second largest school district.

State Auditor Adam Edelen says his office will conduct a special examination of financial mismanagement allegations within Fayette County Public Schools.  A timeline for completion of the audit has not been set.

School system Budget Director Julane Mullins contends there's a 20 million dollar irregularity.  She emailed board members this week claiming there are, in her words, "suspected violations of law and numerous acts of mismanagement, fraud, waste, and abuse of authority."

Tuesday, School Superintendent Tom Shelton held a news briefing and said the allegations are completely unfounded and inaccurate.  He says they've been fully investigated with no improprieties found.  The issue is expected to be one of the first items discussed at tonight's board meeting.
