Reports: U.N. Watchdog To Detail Syrian And Iranian Nuclear Ambitions

May 24, 2011

Iran and Syria are about to come under renewed focus for their nuclear ambitions.

According to The Associated Press and the BBC, the International Atomic Energy Agency will soon officially report that it believes a target that Israeli warplanes bombed inside Syria four years ago was indeed a secret nuclear reactor site.

This follows the word late last month that IAEA chief Yukiya Amano had said the target in Syria was "a reactor under construction."

Syria has long denied it was constructing a reactor — a story that The New York Times broke in 2007.

Meanwhile, Reuters says it has obtained a confidential IAEA report "regarding allegations of possible military aspects to Iran's disputed nuclear program."

The AP adds that the IAEA says in the report "that member states have given it fresh information alleging that Iran has worked secretly on developing nuclear arms."

Iran has long said that it is focusing on nuclear power, not nuclear weapons. Copyright 2011 National Public Radio. To see more, visit
