On this week's Pop Culture Happy Hour, we find that we've been (go figure) immersed in a lot of imagery of commandos and battle, which has led our free-associating minds to a chat about images of fighters — specifically fighters who happen to be women. From young adult fiction to comics to the great big world of Angelina Jolie movies, we consider the current state of the female butt-kicker and whether anything ever really changes or whether it's all just the flipping and flapping of the breeze, which will only settle down again.
Then, we talk about a topic you undoubtedly know well: the movies we can't not watch. We've seen them before, we might even know every word, and we might even own them on DVD, but when we see them float by on cable, we are somehow transfixed and wind up watching them anyway. Why does this happen? And why does it happen with both great movies and movies about high school gender-bending? We try to figure it all out.
And finally, we talk about what's making us happy this week, which takes me back — for probably the last time — to London, where I have one thing left that I really need to talk about.
As always, you can follow us on Twitter — follow me, Stephen, Glen, Trey and Mike.
