Pony and rider are both scrutinized in a national competition this week at the Kentucky Horse Park. The six day US Pony Finals has attracted some 500 ponies of all breeds. In addition to judging ponies on confirmation, handling, and jumping, U-S Equestrian Federation’s Helen Murray says riders are also graded. “So where as in the hunter championship, it was the pony that was being judged, on Sunday in the Pony medal championship, the riders and the kids’ equitation and their riding ability is what’s judged,” said Murray.
The 2012 US Pony Finals has called central Kentucky home for seven years. United States Equestrian Federation spokeswoman Helen Murray says facility improvements made for the 20-10 World Equestrian Games remain very attractive.
"The jumper championship will be in the Alltech Arena. And the Alltech Arena was built prior to the World Equestrian Games and its one of the premiere features here at the horse park so I yes the World Equestrian Games have definitely helped, not only Pony finals, but other events held throughout the year at the horse park,” added Murray.
The national championships wrap up this Sunday at the horse park.
