Thousands of Kentuckians will be taking to the roadways sometime this weekend to celebrate the holiday. Kentucky State Police spokesman Lt. David Jude says law enforcement will be out in full force starting Friday evening around 6.
"That's really a time when law enforcement all across the state are going to be looking for impaired drivers, aggressive drivers, speeding violations, seatbelt violations, and although it may sound Grinch-like, the idea behind this is of course, highway safety and making sure people reach their destinations safely."
Last year Kentucky recorded only one highway fatality over the Christmas holiday enforcement period, three additional lives were lost over the New Year's holiday weekend. Anyone observing reckless or dangerous driving behavior is encouraged to call the KSP hotline at 800-222-5555.
