Pikeville College has changed its name. It will soon be the University of Pikeville. University President Paul Patton says it’s a name the eastern Kentucky school earned many years ago.
“Well, the definition of a university is a college that also offers graduate programs, which we do and have for many years. And, the name should try to indicate to people the kind of institution that you are,” said Patton.
Besides hosting a school of osteopathic medicine, Patton says the university will soon offer a master of business administration.
“The option of calling yourself a university is still strictly optional. There are good universities that still call themselves colleges. And there are still universities that are in fact colleges, but still call themselves universities. So, it’s an arbitrary thing,” said Patton.
Patton says the University of Pikeville is the only school of its kind deep in the heart of Appalachia. He says they’ll officially make the name change in July.
“We’ve had a doctoral program for 13 years. And, we’ve begun a master degree program and we’re planning several more master degree programs. So, we’re a university and we’re going to be an even more prominent one ten years from now,” said Patton.
