Modern Speakers on Henry Clay

The current Speaker of the US House along with three other former Speakers are scheduled to appear as part of the first Henry Clay week event in Lexington.   The annual Student Congress, which attracts rising college seniors from across the country will also be held in June. Speaker of the House John Boehner, former speaker and current democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi plus former speakers Dennis Hastert and Jim Wright will all participate in a moderated conversation June 24th.

It will be held in Transylvania University’s Haggin Auditorium at 7:30.   Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship co-chair, Robert Clay says the aim is to keep political partisanship off the table.

“I’m sure there will be a job here or there, but I think at the end of the day we’re gonna focus on the role of the speaker of the house and how they’ve had to use compromise to make their job easier,” said Clay.

The annual Student Congress will also be held the week of June 18th.    Carey Cavanaugh, Director of the University of Kentucky’s Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce, says students get a feel for the spirit of compromise..

“I think they gain a real insight into both the ideals of Henry Clay and how politics really work and we draw students from every single state in the country and the district of Columbia,” added Cavanaugh.

The Student Congress features 51 rising college seniors from around the country.  The curriculum was developed through UK’s Patterson school, Transylvania, and Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate.
