Lexington’s council is expected to create a new veterans commission in the coming weeks.
An ordinance establishing a 19-person panel got General Government Committee approval last week.
The initiative is being sponsored by council member James Brown.
“What I hope to accomplish is that we can move Lexington a little further up on the chart of services and recognitions for veterans. I know we came in low a few years ago and that’s what started this conversation,” said Brown.
Brown says a ‘wave of valor’ week is planned in November.
In addition, Brown says, after a two to three year hiatus, the Lexington Veterans’ Parade will again be held this fall. Also in the works is for Lexington to host the veterans’ hall of fame ceremony in 2018.
Brown says, if it is given formal approval by the full council, the new veterans commission could hold its first meeting in early 2018.
