Lexington Mayor Jim Gray has announced he will seek the Sixth District congressional seat currently held by Republican Andy Barr.

The mayor, in his second term leading Lexington government, joins three other Democrats in the May primary race.  Those candidates are state Senator Reggie Thomas, retired Marine Colonel Amy McGrath, and retired state engineer Geoff Young.

Gray made his announcement today in Berea. He said in a written statement that “the American dream is under threat.”
“I’m running for Congress because too many people are working harder but not getting ahead.”

Gray also said Washington is broken and can’t fix rising health care costs and the growing cost of a good education.  Gray’s decision paves the way for a wide open mayor’s race next year.
