Officials are investigating another mining fatality in Kentucky. Twenty-six year old Ryan Thatcher of Salyersville died Monday while working at a mine near Inez in Martin County. According to the Energy and Environment Cabinet there were no apparent witnesses to the accident.
Thatcher was thought to be operating a track locomotive pulling two loads of supplies in the mine when the accident occurred. His death follows a fatality in Harlan County last month and in Martin County in March. The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing is investigating while the Voyager Number 7 mine remains closed. Six Kentuckians lost their lives in coal mining accidents in both 2009 and 2010.
