According to the Associated Press, President Barack Obama will meet with members of the Navy SEAL team who killed al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden when he visits Fort Campbell in Kentucky on Friday. However, Governor Steve Beshear will not accompany the president during his first visit to the commonwealth.
The White House source didn’t provide any details of the planned meeting between Mr. Obama and the special operations team that raided the terror suspect’s compound.
Despite Mr. Obama’s negative approval ratings in the state, it speaks volumes that a sitting Democratic governor is missing an opportunity to be seen with the president and troops who killed the most notorious terrorist—during an election year—in order to fulfill his Oak’s Day obligations instead.
A Beshear spokesperson said the White House travel plans weren’t confirmed until late Wednesday, but political observers quickly popped that excuse.
