Berea College’s ‘Deep Green’ residence hall is open for business. Students are settling in to the 42 thousand square foot three story dormitory. It’s expected to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum Certification. The newly opened residence hall is designed to use about a third of the energy found in a traditional dorm.
All wood in ‘Deep Green’, including 267 pieces of furniture made by Berea’s Student Crafts program, was harvested by mule teams in the eight thousand acre Berea College forest. A 50 kilowatt solar panel array installed on the south roof line produces 15 percent of the building’s annual energy. And 100 percent recycled brick covers the building’s exterior.
