A new organization proposed to focus on economic development and marketing of Lexington’s downtown has its first chief executive officer.
The appointment comes following the expected merger of two long-standing downtown groups.
The Downtown Lexington Partnership amounts to a consolidation of the Downtown Lexington Corporation and the Lexington Downtown Development Authority.
The DLC previously marketed its members and the downtown experience for three decades. Meanwhile, the Downtown Development Authority worked on economic development strategies including public projects.
The new partnership president is Terry Sweeney who comes to Lexington from Corpus Christi, Texas where he served as downtown management district director.
Prior to that he was in Indianapolis where he is credited for playing a key role in downtown revitalization.
Lexington’s council must still offer final approval of the merger. It’s been put on the council docket and members indicated support of the merger during budget work.
