Berlin's Fotomarathon: Precise Creativity

Jun 15, 2011

Perhaps you've spent one too many weekends being a passive participant in Berlin culture.

Here's an opportunity to change that. On Saturday, June 18, 2011, photography enthusiasts are invited to participate in the 11th annual Fotomarathon.

If you've participated in a photography marathon elsewhere in the world, it's the same thing. If you haven't, you should really consider it. Here's how it goes.

The self-described "extreme" marathon is part creative challenge, part off-the-beaten-path-tour of Berlin, and part test of endurance. The Verein für Ereignisse has set the starting point on the terrace in front of Universal Music at Osthafen (StralauerAllee 1, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain). At 11am, the overall theme of this year's contest is announced. Participants then set out for an 11-hour trek around Berlin, making their way to the next three stations, where they find out other stipulations for their pictures.

By 11 pm, each contestant needs to have 24 pictures total. If they cohere to the theme and guidelines, are creative, and of course, demonstrate great quality, they'll be considered for prizes. The ten best photo series will be showcased at the end of July in a special exhibit open to the public. Those who don't win won't be showcased. But they'll still have bragging rights: twelve hours around Berlin is no small feat. Plus, they'll get to attend the exhibition for free and judge for themselves.

You can see winning pictures from past marathons.

If you want to participate, make sure to visit the official website for exact details. The last day to register is June 17, 2011 by 8pm. For the English version, look for the unusually tiny British flag in the top right corner of the home page. Note: take a careful look at the requirements for cameras and pictures.

No interest in an eleven-hour hike around the city? Well, we'd still appreciate a little bit of your help. If you see the event in action while you're enjoying your Berlin Saturday, please take a photo and send it to us! We'll use our own NPR Berlin jury, e.g. the staff, to select our favorite photos and post them to our website. If there's a particularly noteworthy anecdote that goes along with the picture, please be sure to include that, too. We're all about the stories here, and who knows, if it's good enough, we might just post it with the submitted photo.

My name is Kathleen Schuster and as part of interning at NPR Berlin this summer, I'll be happily contributing to the NPR Berlin blog. I received my B.A. and M.A. from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, greatly enriched by three years on exchange in Germany. I have also worked in public radio as a student announcer and reporter. Needless to say, I'm very happy to be the summer NPR Berlin intern, where I can combine my love for Germany and journalism.
