The Bowl Championship Series announced today that it has stripped the University of Southern California of the 2004 national championship title. The move comes after the NCAA found that Reggie Bush received benefits not in keeping with NCAA rules.
This marks the first time a football or men's basketball championship has been vacated in major college sports since the polls began.
The Trojans beat Oklahoma 55-19 in the 2005 Orange Bowl to claim the title that season. Bush carried six times for 75 and had two receptions for 31 yards in victory.
"The B.C.S. arrangement crowns a national champion, and the B.C.S. games are showcase events for postseason football," The New York Times reports the B.C.S. executive director Bill Hancock said in a statement. "One of the best ways of ensuring that they remain so is for us to foster full compliance with N.C.A.A. rules."
