Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes coasted to victory in the Tuesday night's election for Secretary of State. The Lexington lawyer took home more votes than any other Democrat on Tuesday's ballot. In her first bid for public office, Alison Lundergan Grimes, the daughter of former Kentucky Democratic Party chair Jerry Lundergan, won 61 percent of the vote. Grimes, who has said she would support automatic restoration of voting rights for felons and opposes a photo ID requirement at the polls, sounded a familiar note in her acceptance speech.
Saying "I wish I had done more" about accusations that one of his former assistants had been sexually abusing young boys for more than a decade, Penn State football coach Joe Paterno just confirmed that he will retire at the end of this season.
The 84-year-old Paterno, who holds the record for most wins by a Division I coach, released this statement moments ago:
"I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.

Ah, to be a Harvard laboratory mouse. The pay stinks, but the food is delish! Researchers at the venerable school have been serving lab mice tiny organic burgers made with meat from Savenor's Market, where Julia Child bought her steaks.
"It came out looking like a beautiful little mini hamburger," says Rachel Carmody, a graduate student in evolutionary biology at Harvard who cooked up the mini-burgers in Petri dishes.

Born in Belize, Central America, Eleanor Guerrero vividly remembers the date she immigrated to the United States. It was June 6, 1968 — the same day was day presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Los Angeles. She established a new milestone date Tuesday. She will remember Nov. 8, 2011, as the day she cast her first vote after becoming a U.S. citizen in June.
Parents of high school students in the Nelson County School District are likely to receive a letter by the end of the week, either from Nelson County High School Principal Eric Gilpin, or from Thomas Nelson High School Principal Wes Bradley. The letter will also serve to inform parents which school their child will attend, as many people are still unsure in which high school’s district they reside, Superintendent Anthony Orr said. The new school, set to open in August, will become the fourth high school in Nelson County.
A record 2,944,603 Kentuckians were registered to vote in Tuesday's general election, but just more than 28 percent made the trip to the polls. By about 10:45 p.m., with 99.61 percent of precincts reporting, 837,868 ballots had been counted. The percentage of voters was slightly higher than the 25 percent to 28 percent that Secretary of State Elaine N. Walker had predicted.
