School Marching Bands Compete for State Titles

Lexington's Paul Laurence Dunbar High School took first place in the Kentucky Music Educators Association state marching band championships' Class 5A division late Saturday. Madisonville North Hopkins won the 4A state title, Adair County took 3A, Larue County won 2A and Beechwood captured the 1A crown.

Kentucky Schools Awarded Blue Ribbon Honor

Two Central Kentucky schools and one Eastern Kentucky school were named as 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their overall academic excellence or their success in closing achievement gaps, according to a release from the Kentucky Department of Education. Among the Kentucky schools honored with the designation were Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary School in Lexington, North Middletown Elementary in Bourbon County and Southside Elementary in Pike County. Others named in Kentucky were Gamaliel Elementary in Monroe County, W.R. McNeil Elementary in Bowling Green and Woodhill Elementary in Fort Thomas.

National cable giant Time Warner Cable is purchasing Lexington cable operator Insight Communications in a $3 billion deal announced Monday.

KY Marine to Receive Medal of Honor

Pentagon officials say President Barack Obama will present the Medal of Honor to a Marine from Kentucky who braved enemy fire in Afghanistan in a bid to find and retrieve three missing Marines and a Navy corpsman. Meyer, a 2006 graduate of Green County High School, is originally from Greensburg.

Churches may Protest Same Sex Marriage Ban

The congregations of 18 churches in the state are considering whether to take a stand to have ministers refuse to sign marriage licenses as a protest of Kentucky's refusal to allow same-sex marriage. Two Louisville churches already have said their ministers will stop signing marriage licenses. Both churches will continue to perform religious marriage ceremonies for straight and gay couples. Other churches are said to be considering joining the protest. Those churches are in Lexington, Berea, London and Richmond.
