Band Director Accused of Selling Instruments

The band director at East Jessamine High School has been suspended during an investigation into claims he sold school instruments online for personal gain. Rex Payton is in his second year as director of the program and also has directed the band at West Jessamine High. Formal charges against him are expected in the next week, Nicholasville police Sgt. Scott Harvey said Thursday.

The chief of Jessamine County schools walked into Jessamine Career and Technology Center on Wednesday afternoon and was baffled when she was greeted by applause from dozens of district administrators, school officials, friends and family. “I thought maybe I had missed something on my calendar — what are they doing?” superintendent Lu Young said. “I knew it wasn’t my birthday.” Then she saw Wayne Young, executive director of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA), and figured it out — she was KASA’s 2012 superintendent of the year.

Wilmore Woman Jailed on rape Charges

A Wilmore woman facing multiple charges of third-degree rape is in jail after police searched for her for several weeks. Ashley B. Bender, 30, of 705 Corbitt Drive in Wilmore was arrested by Jessamine County sheriff's deputy Carl Nickell and booked into the Jessamine County Detention Center just before 6 a.m. Friday, according to jail records.

East Jessamine Removes E.Coli

Remediation work is being completed on the soccer field that was closed last week due to E. coli contamination, and the field could be ready for play as soon as Tuesday. A test sample of standing water at the East Jessamine soccer complex off Wilmore Road revealed a concentration of E. coli nine times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s acceptable risk criteria. The field was closed Aug. 10 after an engineering firm advised school officials skin contact with water was the only danger present.

The Jessamine County school district announced the closure of the East Jessamine soccer field Wednesday after high levels of bacteria were found. A test sample of standing water between the field and the home bleachers showed a concentration of E. coli nine times higher than the EPA's acceptable risk criteria, according to a news release from the school district. The field is not located at East High; the complex is off Wilmore Road behind the central-office building and Jessamine Early Learning Village.

Icthus Music Festival Encourages Attendance

After hosting its first-ever “community night” last year to bring local people in for a night of concerts, the Ichthus Music Festival is offering a special price for a whole day of events geared toward central Kentucky this year. Ichthus 2011, under the theme “re:new,” takes place Wednesday, June 15, through Saturday, June 18. This is the 42nd year for the Christian festival in Wilmore that began in 1970 as a religious response to the Woodstock festival.
